Natural Dyeing

Natural Dyeing is the process of fixing water soluble dye sources from natural sources permanently into textile. Dye sources can come from plants, lichens, mushrooms, insects and mollusks.

In order for the dye to remain fixed in the textile, a mordant made up of a metal salt such as aluminum or iron is used. When a mordanted textile is immersed in a dye bath, the dye and the mordant combine to create an insoluble lake inside the textile, similar to how a lake pigment is made.
